Organic Camellia Seed Oil

by Travis Gerhart
Organic Camellia Seed Oil

Camellia seed oil has a long history of use in Asia, particularly in Japan and China. It has been used for centuries in traditional beauty and wellness practices to moisturize the skin and hair. The oil was extracted from the seeds of the Camellia oleifera plant, which is native to the region. The oil is known for its ability to hydrate and soothe skin. Its high concentration of antioxidants and fatty acids helps protect the skin and hair from damage. As a result, Camellia seed oil is now widely used as an ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and other skincare products.

WHAT IS CAMELLIA SEED OIL?

Camellia is composed of approximately 200 species of flowering botanicals. Still, the primary types utilized for skincare products are japonica, oleifera, and sinensis. Of these three, oleifera is preferred due to its enhanced smoothing and hydrating properties. The oil has a pale yellow oil appearance. It is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores, and it is gentle, lightweight, and versatile.

Camellia oleifera is a powerful replenishing agent due to its high levels of Oleic acid, vitamins (A, B, & E), minerals, and essential fatty acids (Omega 3, 6, & 9). It also offers beneficial qualities that improve hair and skin texture and overall health. It has a molecular weight similar to our skin's own sebum, allowing it to absorb quickly into the skin's deeper layers. Camella is very similar and works well with Jojoba and Macadamia oil for hydration, absorption, and protection.

SKIN HEALTH BENEFITS OF CAMELLIA SEED OIL

Camellia seed oil contains essential fatty acids, including high concentrations of Oleic Acid in particular, reaching upwards of 80% concentration. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and compounds that promote balanced skin health. Some of the main phytonutrients in Camellia seed oil include Catechins, Oleic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Squalene, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E.

Catechins are a type of polyphenol that is commonly found in camellia seed oil. They have antioxidant effects that protect the skin from oxidative stress, damage, and UV rays. Additionally, they work by inhibiting UVA and UVB-related inflammation in the skin.

Oleic acid (Omega-9) is an essential fatty acid that promotes and maintains the skin's suppleness, radiance, and softness. Additionally, oleic acid acts as an antioxidant and reduces the appearance of aging, irritation, and inflammation while promoting cell regeneration.

Linoleic acid (Omega-6) is an essential fatty acid that facilitates wound healing, promotes anti-inflammatory properties, soothes, rejuvenates, fortifies, and promotes the skin's moisture retention ability. Linoleic acid also helps balance our skin's oil and creates a natural protective barrier against environmental damage.

Palmitic acid is an antioxidant that promotes softening, soothing, and skin hydration.

Stearic acid offers exceptional pore-cleansing properties while softening and protecting the skin by binding water. Squalene is naturally abundant in human skin and supports its protective barrier against dehydration and irritation. It offers intensive smoothing, moisturizing, hydration, and antioxidant effects.

Squalene works to restore skin lipids typically lost due to premature aging, promoting the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin A is known to protect the skin against damage caused by UV radiation as well as slow the appearance of aging by stimulating collagen production and encouraging cellular regeneration of damaged cells. Promoting a healthy, strong, balanced, and firm complexion.

Vitamin E (alpha, delta, & gamma-tocopherol) is known to possess antioxidant properties that slow the effects of aging while improving circulation. Vitamin E also helps to prevent moisture loss, cleanse pores, balance oil production, soothe damaged skin, and provide healing support to scarred or blemished skin.
